As early as age 3, children can be evaluated by the school district to assess eligibility to begin receiving special education supports within the public school setting. It is recommended that you connect with your local school district and request an evaluation as your child will likely require extra services/ accommodations within their educational placement for them to effectively and adequately access their education. The evaluation then determines a child's eligibility for special education services through the formation of an individualized education program (IEP) if eligible. These services are then provided and funded by the public school district starting at the age of 3.
• In order to begin, parents/caregivers must request the evaluation in writing by contacting the Director of Special Education Services for their local school district. Special education services may also be referred to Pupil Services or Services for Exceptional Students.
• Autism Scholarship Program: The Autism Scholarship Program is operated by the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) to provide funds of up to $32,445 to parents of a qualified child with an autism spectrum disorder. The program offers the parent(s) of eligible children with autism the opportunity to choose a different implementer of the child's individualized education program (IEP). Another necessary step is to ensure the child's qualifying category for special education services on their Evaluation Team Report (ETR) is listed as Autism.
Your child may benefit from services through your local County Board of Developmental Disabilities which offers a variety of services for children and adults with disabilities. To take full advantage of all the services and supports offered, you first need to determine if your child is eligible for services by contacting your county board's intake and eligibility department.
